Since 1990’s, 3D printing technology is being used by the medical device industry and recently, it has started penetrating into the pharmaceutical industry. The pharmaceutical industry is utilizing 3D printing for manufacturing drugs. The first 3D printed drug was approved in 2015 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), since, then there has been a growing investment in 3D printing drugs from drug manufacturers. The 3D printed drugs are easy to swallow and can be customized according to color, and structure. Spritam was the first drug which got approved by FDA for onset seizures and myoclonic seizers in 2015 and in the same year, it was introduced by Aprecia Pharmaceuticals in the US. The 3D printed drugs can be manufactured only if the FDA passes a priority review voucher for the proposed drugs.


The major factors that are propelling the growth of the 3D printed drugs are technological innovations in 3D printing procedures, user-friendly and easy availability. In addition, it is expected that in the coming years, the ability to print drugs on-demand would reduce the 3D printed drug cost, lower the risk of counterfeiting and would be able to deliver the personalize drug to individual patients i.e. catering the needs of the patient.
